Senegal Preproduction

About me

IDARA UDOFIA

As a recent graduate from Columbia University with a degree in Political Science and Anthropology, Idara Udofia has fused her passion for social justice and art to use film as a medium to unearth, confront, and redress social inequities.

Her latest work in Nigeria in the summer of 2008, with WHARC (Women Health & Research Centre), a women’s non-governmental organization that focuses on African women’s reproductive health issues, greatly inspired this new direction. There she participated in advocacy work and research to reduce maternal mortality and published her first article in an international journal on the issue. After WHARC, she conducted a yearlong research project exploring the politics around maternal mortality in Nigeria; her work has received honorary recognition.

Recognizing the limits of any medium, Idara has been inspired by the power and potential in film to evoke social change. She sees film as a unique tool that can contribute to and transcend current scholarship about women. With this in mind, she is invested in using film as a medium to further activism as she approaches this documentary in Senegal.

Idara is a Nigerian America, born and raised in California’s Bay Area. She has lived in Manhattan for the past four years, and she will be returning to California to work on preproduction. During her time off before law school, she will be living between Dakar, Senegal and the Bay Area to complete the film. She is a self-proclaimed foodie who enjoys poetry, music, and visual arts. Idara is an extrovert and derives pleasure from being in and around nature; she has a genuine appreciation for the outdoors. She has played Division 1 basketball for her University, and she still leads a very physically active life style.
